Pierre Bonnard – The Colour of Memory

Tate Modern 23 Jan – 6 May 2019

I enjoyed a few visits to the Bonnard exhibition. A master of colour and texture.

Around 1912, when he was already in his mid forties, Bonnard altered the direction of his painting. His early success in the 1890’s had been with decorative and fashionable work. Now he began to explore the possibilities of colour in an entirely individual way, enriching his colour combinations.

Bonnard maintained his focus on landscape in the final years of his life. In a characteristic interplay between interior and exterior. His approach become more abstract, enriching colour while reducing detail.

Pages from Bonnard’s sketchbooks. Seen as playful, experimenting with layout and composition.
